1. Persistent tiredness and low energy

Several meta-analyses have linked deficiency to depressive symptoms, and supplementation shows a small but consistent benefit in deficient patients. This is one reason mood symptoms can worsen through winter in southern states.

6. Slow wound healing
Vitamin D is involved in the inflammatory phase of tissue repair. Deficient adults sometimes notice that minor cuts, scrapes, or dental procedures take longer than expected to resolve.

7. Hair thinning or slower hair growth
Vitamin D receptors are found in hair follicle cells. Severe deficiency has been linked to increased telogen effluvium (diffuse hair shedding) and, in the extreme, to conditions like alopecia areata.

Why symptoms alone aren't enough
You'll notice a pattern in the list above: every classic vitamin D deficiency symptom overlaps with at least three other common conditions. That's why relying on symptoms to decide whether you need to supplement leads people in two wrong directions:
- False positives. You feel tired, low, and achy — so you start a vitamin D supplement. But your actual level was already sufficient, and the tiredness was iron deficiency. You supplement for months without addressing the real problem.
- False negatives. You feel fine — so you assume your vitamin D is fine. But you're at 40 nmol/L (insufficient), and the low-grade effects on your immune function, bone density, and long-term risk are silent until they aren't.

Can you feel vitamin D deficiency?
